I am not
sure that it is an upgrade, but, to cut a long story short, I have swapped my
French husband for a British one. Don't get me wrong, I didn't change husband
overnight. it is just that he became British yesterday. And he is insanely
happy about it.
To be
honest with you, I didn't see much change. He is still pretty much the same. Just happier, really. He
still has a French accent when he speaks English (less than me, I give him
that). He says 'mate' to his work colleagues, which I don't really like. And he is British now.
My
friends are all horrified: a French man has a reputation of being fit and
charming. (They also are supposed to have a roving eye, if stereotypes are to
be believed.) Well, English husbands are slightly different, apparently. They
are supposed to have a beer belly and grey hair, I am told. Some even go to the
pub every now and then. In short, a British husband is far less sexier than a
French one. And the same goes for the wife of a British man. Where the hell did
I go wrong?
I thought that our naturalisation was some sort of regularisation. After all, we have been living in London for the best part
of 9 years now. It was time to take the plunge. We are both British now. I am
keeping my French citizenship but I am not sure he will. He is just happy to be British. Why didn't I see it coming? I thought that he would be torn. I was clearly wrong. Which team will he support for rugby? He doesn't seem to care, as long as France or England beats the All Blacks. Things have really
changed. What a difference a few years make! Where do we go from here?
I am not
sure that it has sunk in yet.
I have a
British husband.
Any advice?

Well, if legend is to believed, you can forget about those bottles of Dior perfume or fine silk scarves on your birthday and expect a pink sparkly electric razor for shaving your legs, or a makeover so you can end up looking like Jordan. Also you will start having to call him "hubby" or "'im in there" (and you will be "'er indoors")
ReplyDeleteIt could have been worse - he could have become Irish! My advice to your present husband is he should sue for being called British - he has a refutation to protect!!
ReplyDeleteHe sounds a sweetie. Love the way he's insanely happy about being British. What does it mean? Why does he feel like that, that's what I want to know.
ReplyDeleteIt is an upgrade ! -
ReplyDeleteNo time today to say much more than how funny you are today, Muriel.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm back in France for a few weeks. I can guarantee you that my Deep South American husband will never go French or British. Although after all those years of fine wine I'm sure his liver speaks with a French accent.
All Blacks - Your British husband will shout if you get that wrong! ;-)
ReplyDeleteCamping holidays in the rain in the Lake District next!!
ReplyDeleteLOL and more, Muriel. I would not worry, be happy for him. I'd apply for British citizenship immediately if it made me happier!
ReplyDeleteGo for it! Seriously, why is he so happy? I hadn't realised that he wanted so very much to be British!
ReplyDeleteNo, please, no! It must be freezing as well!
ReplyDeleteOooops...I corrected it. Thanks for letting me know!
ReplyDeleteWell, that's a start, isn't it? I was wondering, where does this love of France come from? I must have missed something!
ReplyDeleteGood to know. can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I think that he finds the French a bit annoying right now. I am not sure why.
ReplyDeleteHas he? Not since he married me, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteWell, that's something to look forward to, isn't it? I can't wait. Does your husband treat you like that Jenny?
ReplyDeleteLOL! Best post ever! :) Laughing so hard that I don't know what to comment!
ReplyDeleteThank you Hajra! I have to admit that I didn't expect him to be that happy! Good for him, I say.
